A history of vodka
It’s not entirely clear where vodka originated – records from Russia and Poland suggest an origin in these countries. But the drink we have today differs greatly in both taste and smell to what may have been vodka in the past – back then, it was more often used as medicine!
What’s clearer is that the various names for vodka often have roots meaning “to burn”. It’s a perfect description of this particular drink, which is known for its sharp taste and heady kick. That’s why it’s so often drunk with a mixer or two in order to reduce the punch and sweeten the taste. Vodka connoisseurs, though, will still enjoy the drink straight – we’d just recommend taking it in small sips!
