Usually distilled from wine – though we also stock some fantastic cherry brandy – brandy is a sweeter alternative to whisky. You can consider it your post-dessert dessert thanks to its luscious sweetness, and it’s an excellent choice if you find whisky or rum too strong for your taste.

How to drink brandy

Unlike many other spirits, brandy is best drunk at room temperature, or even slightly warmed either through pre-heating or through cupping the glass. You can also drink brandy warmer, though don’t heat it too much or the smell will become overpowering and take away the pleasure of your tipple. Try it neat to appreciate the work and years that have gone into making this historic drink, or add a little water if the natural taste is too strong for you.

As for glasses, brandy is often drunk from a snifter – a short-stemmed glass with a wide base – or a wine glass or tulip glass.

Brandy cocktails

We choose our brandy for its excellent quality, so we’d always recommend sampling it without any additions in the first instance. But brandy can also be fantastic in a number of cocktails. A sidecar – brandy with orange liqueur and lemon juice – will take you back to the parties of the roaring ‘20s. Or keep it simple with a Metropolitan – brandy, vermouth and syrup.

Of course, brandy is also a popular addition to cooking – often found in Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and brandy butter.
