Description
Shed 1 Gin Giggle in the Ginnel.
Shed 1 Gin Giggle in the Ginnel won Bronze at the 2021 World Gin Awards: Signature Botanical. Judges described it as, ” Clear angelica notes on the nose alongside poppy seed aromas. The angelica is also dominant on the palate with a heavy dose of juniper and a little rooty, earthy note. This is quite easy-drinking and will definitely please angelica fans.” It also received Highly Commended in the Craft Distillery Expo Gin of the Year Awards (2019/20) in the Signature Botanical Gin Category.
Shed 1 Gin Giggle in the Ginnel was created for a party Andy & Zoey had in the ginnel (Northern English for alleyway) next to their house. A marvellous time was had! The signature botanical is Star Anise (giving it an aniseed edge) mixed with Angelica joined with Elderberry and fresh Orange Zest to form a powerful gin of significant character. Warming and smooth. 43% ABV
Andy & Zoey started in their Garden Shed and moved to The Old Calf Shed in 2019. Here, they opened a Visitor Attraction, which was shortlisted in The World Gin Awards, Best Gin Visitor Attraction, 2021. They offer Cumbria’s only Make Your Own Gin Experiences, as well as Distillery Tours & Tastings and a botanical-inspired Afternoon G&Tea. Their awards include Great Taste, Crafdi and The World Gin Awards, plus the Gin Distillery won The Gin Guide’s, Small Producer, Environmental Sustainability Award, in both 2020 & 2021. Cuckold’s Revenge, the very first Gin they created, is featured in “101 Gins To Try Before You Die”!
Andy has been a professional actor for over 20 years. Over that time, he’s tread the boards from Land’s End to John O’Groats and from Asia to America. Zoe started her work life as a special paint finisher, then got the opportunity to teach in Japan for a year. This turned into a 7-year stint in Asia.
They bumped into each other in South Korea and Zoe returned back to the UK the following year. Andy’s home was already in Cumbria and when they moved to Ulverston they realised they’d found somewhere very special.
Zoe had been making compound gin elixirs for a while and Andy started getting more interested in the process. After playing with botanicals for a while they decided it was time to take it up a notch and produce their own gin. They were looking for bigger, bolder flavours than they found in a lot of the gins they sampled. So, the next question was where. Somewhere big enough for a small still, close to home would be good, rent-free even better.
“How about the shed?”
“Which one?”
“Shed 1, closest to the house.”
And so, Shed 1 Distillery was born.
