Cumbrian Tea is sourced ethically and sustainably from Kenya and Malawi—two countries known for their political and climatic stability. This approach ensures full traceability throughout the process, from tea cultivation in the plantations to its transportation and delivery to the UK. By sourcing from regions with consistent climates, Cumbrian Tea guarantees the same exceptional taste, batch after batch.
In addition:
Cumbrian Tea is simply green by nature—except, of course, the tea itself, which is black!
The Details:
The tea bags are crafted from 100% Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), a plant-based polymer that is both biodegradable and compostable. They are unbleached thanks to a cutting-edge manufacturing process: during the plastic-free, plant-based pulp phase, oxygen is used to “fire” the mix, removing most of the colour. This leaves the tea bags exceptionally clean and ready to hold the delicious Cumbrian Tea blend.
The inner wrapper, made from compostable metallised cellulose, is recyclable but not with standard plastics due to its lower melting temperature. This can cause issues at recycling facilities. For this reason, it’s recommended to check your local council’s waste management capacity before disposal. Compostable metallised cellulose biodegrades within approximately three months at industrial food waste and composting facilities, although it may take longer in home composters.
Finally, the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) ensures that the cardboard used in the outer packaging is sourced only from sustainably managed forests, supporting the planet while delivering great tea.
