Arran Port Cask

Arran Port Cask is a fantastic choice at any time, particularly as an after dinner dram, especially with a delicious cheese selection. Arran are delighted to present their range of wine cask finishes Single Malt in a brand new pack for 2020. The same delicious Single Malt with a new-look pack.

After initially maturing in traditional oak casks for approximately 8 years, The Arran Single Malt in this bottling was finished in a selection of Port casks sourced from an artisan producer of this iconic Portuguese fortified wine.

The maturation process was monitored under the watchful eye of Arran’s Master Distiller, to ensure that the Port casks and the intrinsic character of The Arran Single Malt partnered with each other perfectly. The end result is a combination that’s full of charm and rich flavour, and a wonderful way to discover more about the Arran range of Single Malts.

Arran Single Malt starts its life as Scottish rainwater at Loch Na Davie in the hills high above the distillery. The clear water cascades down the Easan Biorach burn through six waterfalls, each one purifying the water further. Their barley arrives from maltsters on the mainland as whole grains. The grains are then milled by us in Lochranza. Over the course of many years in their warehgouse on Arran, the spirit inherits colour and flavour from the wood. The quality of the casks that they work with is of the utmost importance. Arran never add caramel or strip flavour out of their whiskies using chill filtration. The purity of their water means that they can create a clean, sweet dram which is entirely natural and unadulterated.

Arran has soaring hills and rugged coasts, rich farmland and dense forests, all concentrated into a compact parcel floating in the Firth of Clyde between the Ayrshire coast and the Kintyre peninsula. It’s known as ‘Scotland in miniature’, as it shares some of the characteristics of the Highlands and Lowlands, the mainland and the Western Isles.

Great malt whisky is a distillation of the place it’s made. The local water, microclimate and air quality all influence the spirit as it’s distilled and matured. Isle of Arran whisky couldn’t come from anywhere else but this wee rock, of twenty miles by ten. Arran whisky is the island, bottled.

This geography is key to the character of their whisky. On this island, they make a spirit that reflects a range of regional influences, yet achieves a rare and unique personality all its own. Rather like the island itself.

With the arrival of their sister distillery in Lagg at the south end of the island in 2019,  Arran are proud to be able to show visitors to their island the two very different sides to their island home.  From the impressive peaks of the north end where their un-peated Arran Single Malt is distilled, to the vast agricultural landscapes of the south where their heavily peated Lagg Single Malt awaits them in a few years time, they have a lot to offer their visitors.  One island, two distilleries – make them your next whisky destination!
