Emma Kaye

Meet Emma Kaye

They say behind every successful man is a successful and well organised woman. Meet Emma, the lady with a sweet tooth. Emma and husband Andrew are the duo that launched Chestnut House in 2016, and in 2018, a gift shop in the village called The Barn.

Favourite tipple: I love Shed 1 – Shed Loads of Love, it’s a strawberry and chilli gin, fruity and full strength, and for a straight gin it has to be Bedrock Export Strength (46%) with mint and Fevertree light tonic.

Takeaway tea break choice: Cappuccino with anything from Traybakes  – I’ve got a sweet tooth!

Supper off the shelf: Low Howgill ready meals are absolutely beautiful – I recommend the Bombay Chicken, or if you want a fish dish – try Bells Fish Pie or Prawn Stir Fry  – both are locally sourced.

Fun outside work: As a family we love getting out with the dogs on some great walks. At home I love developing new fudge recipes – like Cherry Bakewell – one of my favourites!

More about Emma:

Emma grew fond of gin in her early 20’s. Perhaps it was that shared interest that attracted Emma and Andrew to each other? Together they ran the shop at Lowther Holiday Park before starting out in this crazy adventure together, first opening Chestnut House, then when the opportunity arose, opening The Barn just down the road to focus on gifts and homemade fudge.

Emma divides her busy days in three. As well as juggling school runs for daughter Josie, Emma also splits her working life between their two shops in Pooley Bridge – Chestnut House and The Barn.

Just so you know, sweet-toothed Emma is a master fudge maker and loves nothing more than creating new flavours for fudge produced in The Barn

Over time, Emma has built up  her knowledge of the spirit through reading books – and has a gin book library at home. Emma would say Andrew knows more about gin in general, but Emma certainly knows more about the unusual ones.

When anyone comes into the shop looking for something different, we’ll call on Emma for the quirky stuff. She’s got an armoury of factoids – like knowing the Anty Gin Distillate is made 100% from Ants!

If you asked Emma what her favourite job is – she’d say merchandising  – “making our Gin-Sing.”
