Darren Todd

Meet Darren Todd

If you’ve ever been into Chestnut House, you’d remember Darren. Front of house and full of fun and banter, he’s a mine of information and just loves to talk about what we have in the shop. Darren would call himself Sampler in Chief and people often think he owns the shop – such is his passion for what he does.

Favourite tipple: I love coconut,  so it’s got to be Hoxton Gin – it’s the only one with coconut botanicals!   You could say it’s a very posh Malibu, but it still tastes like gin. It’s great with Fevertree Mediterranean Tonic and grapefruit

Takeaway tea break choice: Large latte and Traybakes Peppermint Slice

Supper off the shelf: Low Howgill does great pies – so for me it’s got to be their large Chicken and  Ham Pie with Hawkshead Relish or Fig and Cinnamon Chutney.

Fun outside work: Love life as a Dad with a young family. Happy to watch football, but happier being a Rugby Union Referee.

More about Darren:

Darren is a local lad and has known Andrew since they were kids aged 11. So, when Andrew asked him to join the team in September 2018, Darren couldn’t wait to come onboard.

Once a pub landlord, Darren certainly had the hospitality background to draw on. He’s great with people and loves talking to people about our gins (and other drinks too). He arrived with a great base knowledge of the drink trade – and knows a thing or two about gins – and real ales – and rum. But today, he has much more of a focus on being a real gin enthusiast, reading up  on gin and listening to distillers.

In his first year Darren told us he’d been to over 30 different events doing tastings – from county shows to Patterdale Dog Day, Hawkshead Christmas Fair and Taste Cumbria.

He has a way with people and says one of the favourite things he likes about the job is the way the place feels and the local ‘craic’ with customers. With a strong local customer base all year round, Darren loves the real family vibe,  topped up by curious tourists through the long and ever extending season.

For those who have not been able to visit – you’ll always catch a glimpse of Darren on our social media –spot his videos on our FaceBook page he’s definitely the front face of what we do!

We asked Darren what’s his favourite part of the job? – he said he loves nothing better than standing outside the shop, encouraging people to come and try our tasting table. (During Covid-19 this was not available and was sadly missed by us all.)
