Lochlea Sowing Edition Whisky
The Lochlea Sowing Edition Whisky First Crop is the first of four annual bottlings, each with a different theme based on what is happening on the farm during the four seasons.
The Lochlea – Sowing Edition First Crop spirit is distilled from locally grown barley and natural water resources to ensure full traceability from field to cask. It has been matured in first-fill Bourbon barrels. Naturally coloured and non-chill filtered.
Sowing Edition reflects the season of Spring when everything bursts into life and the distillery is sowing the seed for this year’s barley. Aromas of green apple skins, pear drops and custard creams. The Palate is packed with vanilla sweetness, orchard fruit and hazelnuts which lead to a fruity final sweetness and lasting finish.
Lochlea Distilling Co is an independent family-owned distillery based in Craigie, South Ayrshire. The farm was home to Robert Burns from 1777-1784 and the first whisky from Lochlea was released on Burns Night in 2022. The distillery has an innovative and responsive approach to distilling and use their own barley grown on the farm along with an on-site water source to allow greater control over the quality as well as creating a flavour profile unique to Lochlea.
In this line of the seasonally inspired series, the Lochlea Sowing Edition from first-fill bourbon casks will be followed by a Harvest Edition in summer (European Oak Double Matured in Port Wine Casks), in autumn by a Fallow Edition (first-fill Oloroso Sherry Casks) and finally in winter by a Ploughing Edition matured in ex-Laphroaig casks, as Lochlea Production Director and Master Blender John Campbell said according to the online magazine The Spirits Business.
With this series, the aim is to take whisky fans on a journey through the seasonal changes in farm work, because this is particularly important at Lochlea: The farm distillery in Ayrshire uses grain that in grown on site for their whisky production.
